Proposed D2 subway route to traverse downtown revealed

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) has announced that a second light rail line has been approved by the DART board of directors and the Dallas City Council to come through Dallas’s downtown.

The downtown subway’s new route will avoid crossing beneath I-345 and will instead veer north completely missing Deep Ellum. The newly approved route goes under the public right-of-way before connecting south of Ross Avenue with a tunnel running along Central Expressway.

Another big advantage of this new route will be that the Good Latimer Freeway station in Deep Ellum will not have to be replaced. The earlier plan called for a Live Oak station a block over replacing the current one.

Print shops are a source of both inside and outside signage.

Among those to benefit the most from the reworked route will be those bars and restaurants that have sprung up on Good Latimer, some of which would have been razed to make way while others would have suffered the loss of the station.

Plans for the D2 line were considered to enable DART to increase train capacity through downtown. This will in turn shorten the time between trains as well as provide backup in the event of outages on the present aboveground line.

Four stations are planned for the proposed D2 Subway: CBD East, Commerce Street, Metro Center, and Museum Way. The tunnel will extend from Victory Park up to the Ross Avenue existing tunnel.
