Waiver for registration renewal to end this week

All good things come to an end, including the pandemic-prompted temporary waiving of certain state requirements regarding vehicle title and registration.

Once the waiver is no longer in place, police will be free to issue citations to Dallas residents caught driving without a current registration receipt or sticker. The waiver expires this Wednesday, April 14th, following which citations will be issued without any grace period being given.

The temporary waiver was issued by Governor Greg Abbott on March 16th, 2020 as a means of reducing in-person coronavirus exposure. As many government offices resume normal activity, Stationery printers will be able to supply the necessary services.

According to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, three options are available to those needing to register their vehicle. They can do so online at TxDMV.gov up to 9 months past the vehicle’s registration expiration date, or they can send the bottom part of their registration renewal form by mail along with payment and any other information required by their county’s tax assessor-collector. The final alternative is a visit to the county’s tax assessor-collector’s office in person.

The Texas DMV offered the following in a recent release:

“Before renewing registration, Texans will need to obtain a passing vehicle inspection at the state vehicle inspection station of their choice, unless their vehicle is exempt from inspection requirements.”

The expiration of the waiver also affects vehicle titling, 30-day permits, and parking placard renewal for those with permanent disabilities.
