New pavilion and more for Dallas Klyde Warren Park

A planned for expansion of almost two-acres is planned for Klyde Warren Park using a portion of the Woodall Rogers Freeway that will include an event pavilion, new lawn space and a seasonal ice rink.

It was announced at the end of June that the 1.7-acre expansion will be built on the two sections of the freeway, expanding the park to 7.1 acres from its original 5.4 acres. The add-on will be toward Field Street on the park’s west side, while covering the freeway’s final recessed portion.

The part west of Akard Street will be dedicated to a 37,000-square-foot green space dubbed The Jacobs Lawn, where markets, festivals, civic celebrations, performances and more can be held. Next to the lawn, visitors can view city traffic disappearing beneath them at the site’s Overlook, providing visual evidence that the park was built over one of Texas’ busiest freeways. During winter the lawn hosts an outdoor ice-skating rink.

The section located between St. Paul Street and Akard Street will sport an enclosed two-level glass-and-steel pavilion featuring an open-air rooftop area. The building will provide a climate-controlled 24,000 square foot event and reception space.

Apart from a dedicated U-turn space being eliminated at Akard Street to accommodate the Jacobs Lawn area, it seems traffic patterns will be unchanged.

Construction is anticipated to start before 2026 is over and is expected to take 24 months to complete.
