Forbes evaluated 500 colleges and universities across the country using criteria such as the average student debt, graduate outcomes and the student’s return on investment.

In addition to its national ranking at No. 103, the University took the No. 5 spot among Texas schools. SMU has a 61 percent acceptance rate and has over 7,500 undergraduate students. Forbes listed the per year cost of SMU at $86,090 with the average grant per student at $36,850 and the average debt per student at $14,284.
Forbes described the university:
"Finance, economics, and accounting are some of the top majors at SMU. The university is eager to expand its research prowess, making plans to achieve the “Research One” (R1) status issued by the Carnegie Classification system."
The profile also listed Oscar-winning actress Kathy Bates, Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd and Laura Bush, a former first lady as famous alumni.
Other Dallas universities on the Forbes list were the University of Texas at Dallas and the University of Dallas at No.141 and No. 422 respectively.
The 2025 edition of the Top 500 Universities listed the top three schools as MIT, Columbia University and Princeton University in that order.
