Urban Youth Academy on its way to West Dallas

On November 17, the Texas Rangers revealed their plans to build West Dallas an Urban Youth Academy.

The Rangers, with assistance from Major League Baseball (MLB) as well as from the Major League Baseball Players Association, have taken on the Urban Youth Academy project in concert with Mercy Street.

Fundraising for the event will likely feature appearances by the Texas Rangers and events sanctioned by MLB, and the use of promotional items like custom Pens and Drinkware. A significant donation has already been made to the project by the L.A. Dodgers Clayton Kershaw. The Highland Park ace left-hander donated funds via his charitable foundation, Kershaw’s Challenge.

In addition to Dallas, MLB Urban Youth Academies are also planned for San Francisco and Kansas City. That will bring the total up to eight with the ones already in existence in Compton, California, Houston, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, and New Orleans. This year, MLB and the players’ union have made a commitment of $30 to these academies.

Five baseball fields will be part of the Dallas academy, as well as a center featuring classrooms, a weight and nutrition room, and practice areas. Promoting the game in underserved areas is one goal of the academy, but it also encourages growth for participants in other areas as well. Educational programs are part of the project as well, with tutoring, help preparing for college, and internship options available.
