Texas high on best states for nurses list

As the healthcare industry continues to recover from the recent pandemic and the loss of large numbers of its members due to retirement, Dallas residents will be relieved to hear that their state is ranked the second best for nurses.

A study conducted by Forbes Advisor ranked each of the nation’s states for how favorable they are for those in the nursing professions. Several factors were taken into consideration when judging the states nurse-friendliness. According to the report:

"Salary is a significant factor in any professional’s career decisions, but it’s not the only one to weigh when deciding where to work. You should also consider job availability, economic demand, and licensing processes before settling on a place to grow your career."

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) lists the median salary of nurses at $81,220 per year. In Texas that salary is $74,540, lower than in California and Florida; however, the lower cost of living here offsets the difference. Currently, the Lone Star State employs 231,000 nurses, the second-highest number in the country, with the projected demand expected to increase by 16,000 within the next eight years.

When it comes to engaging nurses during a time of high demand, Texas also benefits from being part of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), which gives nurses licensed in Texas the ability to practice in all other NLC participating states.
