On February 6, a new Dallas ice cream store opened on Lovers Lane that is unique on two counts: its flavor of ice cream and its business plan.
Howdy Homemade features Dr. Pepper Chocolate Chip Ice Cream, created by the ice cream shop’s owner Tom Landis. Landis joked that he not entirely sure where the inspiration for the flavor cam from, but he believes that it will be a hit with Texans. New culinary creations and novel flavors, with the help of a flyer printing service to advertise them, can often strike a chord in an area.
A total of 14 special needs students from Highland Park High School’s Transitions programs work at Howdy Homemade, and one of the students, 19-year-old Coleman Jones, is part of the management team. Jones explains that he helps other students to transition into the work environment.
Landis is the lone Howdy Homemade investor and expects that the store will likely operate in the red for a while, but he believes in his team. He explains the store’s theme is friendliness, which also explains how ‘Howdy’ came to be in its name.
Landis believes his employees are an undervalued resource and has set a goal of obtaining a place for Howdy Homemade as a vendor at the Texas State Fair, allowing him to showcase his employees.
