The Dallas Police Department’s interim police chief explained in a recent news conference that he would not consider accepting the position on a permanent basis.
On October 7, Interim Police Chief David Pughes, a 26-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department, was formally introduced as the city’s interim police chief. Pughes has, for the last 14 months, held the position of Executive Assistant Police Chief and took over the top spot following the retirement of former Police Chief David Brown on October 4.
Pughes explained his lack of interest in becoming chief of police, saying that the job requires a commitment that at this time of his life he is not willing to make. The interim chief said his family has already made huge sacrifices for his career and he would not ask them to make even more. He did, however, assert his intentions to serve the department as interim chief until a new chief can be found and hired.
Although Pughes has indicated he has no desire to change his digital Business Cards to read Dallas Chief of Police, he nevertheless has his own ideas for the department during his time as interim chief. He plans to leave the property crime and violent crime task forces in place, while placing added focus on building community trust and on fugitive apprehension.
