Florida may still be No.1 among retirees, but according to U.S. News & World Report, Texas is on its way up as a retirement spot, with Dallas-Fort Worth putting in a particularly strong showing.
To rate retirement locations, data from 125 of the nation’s largest metro areas was analyzed by U.S. News to determine how each was meeting the needs and expectations of retirees. Housing affordability and healthcare quality are of particular importance in the magazine’s rating system.
DFW scored 7 out of a possible 10 to achieve the top spot in Texas and the No.10 spot nationwide among best places in 2020 for retiring. Housing affordability in Dallas-Fort Worth was rated at a 6.2 and healthcare quality at a 6.3.
Any news that shows a city in a favorable light almost inevitably leads to that city’s chamber of commerce including the information in promotional materials sent to their printing services.
Austin, on the heels of DFW, was No.11, with Houston and San Antonio a little way back in the No. 29 and No. 39 positions respectively. Austin’s overall score was equal to that of DFW but the state’s capital did not do as well in the categories of housing affordability, which was only 5.7, and scored a disappointing 5.8 for healthcare quality.
Florida, the traditional favorite for retirees garnered three of the top five spots: Fort Myers was No. 1, Sarasota claimed No. 2, and the No. 5 spot went to Port Saint Lucie.
