A 29-page program outlining Dallas’ Violent Crime Reduction Plan for 2020 has recently been released and includes short-term policies to offer immediate relief, as well as long-term plans to make larger reductions in all categories of crime.
The plan’s goals are somewhat ambitious; they include a reduction in violent crime in 2020 of 5% as well as a reduction of 10% in certain high crime areas. To accomplish this the plan contains four cornerstones: a data-driven approach, improving communications and coordination, increasing clearance rates and solvability, and technology.
Changes to a local government department are usually more successful if the public is brought on board. Brochure printing offers a means to gain the public’s cooperation by explaining how the changes will benefit the community, and how they will be achieved.
Among the strategies that will be employed are Risk Terrain Modeling, which identifies environmental factors that contribute to crime such as the presence of abandoned buildings, vacant lots, and poor lighting. Other departments, such as Dallas Fire-Rescue, Parks and Recreation, Housing, Community Lighting and Code Compliance will be brought in to assist in mitigating these factors.
The Police Department also has plans to increase the percentage of civilians holding administrative jobs from 15% to 20% during this year, thereby freeing up police officers currently filling those positions.
