Once again, Allen's Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital has been designated a 'baby-friendly’ organisation.
In 2009, Texas Health Allen was the first hospital in the state to receive the honor. Hospitals are required to be re-designated every five years, which gives Texas Health Allen another first – the first hospital in the state to be re-designated.
According to Baby-Friendly Coordinator and Lactation Consultant Vicki Gettel, baby-friendly hospitals encourage skin-to-skin contact as much as possible between mother and baby, beginning immediately after birth. This emphasis on such contact increases the likelihood of successful breastfeeding, and studies show that babies breastfeed longer when they have this intimate contact with the mother.
Due to the hospital's initiative to increase skin-to-skin contact, Texas Health Allen has a markedly higher percentage of mothers who successfully breastfeed. About 90% of new mothers make the choice to breastfeed, with 88% of those nursing exclusively while in the hospital. According to Gettel, breast milk is superior to formula in that it not only contains all the antibodies and nutrients a baby needs, it also adjusts as the baby's needs change.
