City wins awards for its parks

The City of Allen was recently awarded a gold medal for its role in parks and recreation management.

Each year, dozens of communities throughout the United States receive gold medal awards for their work in innovative approaches, managing resources, long-range planning, and providing sound business practices for their parks and communities.

The award, which was founded in 1965, is given out by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA), which works in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). Cities could choose to celebrate such an award with Promotional Products and Flyers, especially if, as with Allen, this is their first win after being in the finals four years in a row.

The awards are split into seven groups (five are to do with population, one is for military recreation, and another is for state parks). They are also judged on three areas: health and wellness, conservation and social equity. The award winners are decided upon by a panel of five individuals who are selected for their knowledge and experience.

The announcement was made during the 2016 NRPA Annual Conference on October 6. The City of Allen will now compete for the grand honors with three fellow finalists in their class (which is Class III, made up of cities with populations between 75,001 and 150,000) later this year.
