The recent installation of a new bridge spanning Allen’s Cottonwood Creek is the latest installment in what will eventually be an 80-mile connectivity trail through the city.
The bridge, conceived by Metalphorphosis, LLC.’s designers FitzGibbons and Shroeder, is a 105-foot-by-14-foot structure made up of Brazilian hardwood decking and weathered steel. On September 23, the pre-fabricated structure was hoisted into its place spanning the creek.
The FitzGibbonand and Shroeder design was selected unanimously from three design finalists. The “Current Drift” concept provided the aesthetic appeal to the bikers and hikers for which the city was looking.
The bridge installation is one of the finishing touches of the Cottonwood Trail project, which began in the spring. The 0.6 mile trail will connect two existing trails, forming a seven-mile loop that provides walking access between the city’s Central Business District and several city parks.
Allen’s increasing walkability is something the city will surely want to include in its latest promotional literature. Brochures detailing the Cottonwood Trail Bridge and other features of Allen’s downtown connecting trail system will be something all members of the city’s hospitality industry may wish to have on hand.
According to city landscape architect Matt McComb, the start of October will see phase one of the project completed. Shortly after phase one’s completion, the city will begin taking bids for phase two.
