The Active Joe will be holding two marathons in Allen at Celebration Park to benefit a local foundation.
Those interested in staying active during New Year's Eve and New Year's Day can participate in a competitive activity known as the New Year's Double. Runners who win in their age group category will receive a commemorative champagne glass, and those who participate in both marathons will earn a large challenge plate. Athletes competing in both events can also receive two tri-blend race shirts for registering, and all finishers are given a medal for their achievement.
The organization benefiting from the New Year's Double is the Allen Parks Foundation. The purpose of the group is to enhance the community's park system and recreational areas by developing public programs and expanding the parks. One of the projects completed by the foundation is the large kidMania playground located in Celebration Park. The nonprofit organization has raised more than $100,000 in private donations since forming in 2011.
The New Year's Double will be held from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm on December 31 and January 1. Those interested in joining the half marathon and marathon can pay $90, and runners who want to participate in the 5K can pay $45.
