Allen library to offer lecture on state camel experiment

The owner of the Texas Camel Corps will be giving a presentation in August at the Allen Public Library.

Texas Camel Experiment is a presentation that is part of the Allen Public Library’s OnStage @ APL series. The program will educate guests about the Texas Camel Experiment, a project that utilized camels in military operations to help move supplies in the American Southwest. The military figured camels could probably be used in the arid environments of states like Texas if they could survive in deserts overseas. Guests will learn about the ecology of camels during the presentation and why the Southwest was a suitable habitat for them.

Doug Baum will be the presenter of the program. Baum has experience working at the Texas Civil War Museum and used to live in Nashville, Tennessee as a zookeeper. His organization, the Texas Camel Corps, honors the original Texas Camel Experiment by using the animals to haul freights. Baum’s camels have been featured in the film A Texas Funeral and were once used in a Toyota commercial. He also offers Big Bend Camel Treks to those interested in riding camels.

The presentation will be held on Thursday, August 24 and will begin at 7:30 pm. There is no need to register, and the lecture is free for patrons to watch. Libraries that host special events like this may use flyer printing to ensure their patrons are aware of the programs.
