For the third year in a row, the Allen Public Library has earned the Achievement of Library Excellence award in the State of Texas. The library was one of just 43 libraries in the state, out of 548, to obtain this achievement.
The recognition follows a year of milestones for the library, no doubt helped through advertising of their services and programs via the distribution of Flyers, Brochures, and Catalogs obtained from local Print companies.
Their 2016 summer reading program had a record enrollment of approximately 4,500 children, just over 800 teenagers, and 1,064 adults. More than 17,500 attended the July summer program, which was a new record for monthly attendance.
Volunteerism was up as well, with almost 100 teenagers providing over 1,700 hours of assistance to help support the summer season, which is the busiest time of year for the library.
The library staff were kept busy, answering over 84,000 questions at libraries reference desk, which breaks down to over 230 questions a day. As attendance at the library grows, the library is constantly adding new items, with 2016 breaking a record of having seen the addition of almost 23,000 library catalogue items.
A special celebration of the library's 50th anniversary is planned for October 2017. The Allen Public Library is located at 300 N. Allen Drive. It is open Monday through Thursday 10:00 am to 9:00 pm, Friday and Saturday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Sunday 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
