Having been launched on April 26, the exhibit ‘Gone to Texas’, is available for viewing at the Allen Heritage Center for the next few months.
Featuring numerous items from theearly settlement of the Allen area, the display gets its name from the notices people left at their old homes to inform their neighbors they had left for a new life in Texas.
The show will include photos, as well as items the pioneers used on their journey and once they had settled. Perhaps of particular interest will be Copies of survey maps for the original homesteads. Residents can compare those early land surveys with the present-day topography and layout of modern day Allen. With the help of overlays, they can link original homestead owners to present day properties.
To bring the exhibit full circle, visitors are encouraged to record their own experiences of how and when they came to Texas, as well as where they came from, at the Allen Heritage Guild website.
The Center is a reproduction of the Houston and Texas Central Railway Depot (circa 1918) and is open on select Saturdays and Sundays. Visitors should call ahead to check on dates and times of operation, and group tours can be arranged by appointment.
