Gallatin’s Boy Scout Troop 407 has renovated a local alley, adding amenities to honor the spirit of late community volunteer Jim Hawkins.
The project adds a number of community resources to the area. A “blessing box” provides a place for people to deposit non-perishable food items for those in need, while a Free Little Library does the same for Books. There is also a “positivity board” designed for cheerful community messages and a drop-box for worn-out flags. The make-over also includes landscaping, installation of extra seating, and a mural featuring the Boy Scout slogan “Do A Good Turn Daily”
The project was led by 14-year old Liam Alexander, as his Eagle Scout Project. Alexander raised over $4,000 from the community for the refurbishment. The project is designed to honor Hawkins, who in addition to his work as a Scout leader was active in the Gallatin Rotary Club, Habitat for Humanity, and the Sumner County Adult Education Advisory Council, and wrote hundreds of columns for regional newspapers. Beautification efforts like this often use methods like murals and banner printing to pay tribute to people who are active in the community.
The renovated alley in Gallatin is located between the Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce and the Secret Garden consignment store, with the first additions installed in October and more to come.
