Brief history
Gallatin is the seat of Sumner County, a designation it has held since it was established in 1802. Albert Gallatin, who served as the Secretary of the Treasury to the third and fourth presidents, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, is remembered in the name of the town. Gallatin was surveyed in 1803 and followed the tradition of having an open public square. The community was formally incorporated in 1815.
