Conservation group to hold hiking month

Gallatin residents are invited to participate in TennGreen Land Conservancy’s annual Hike-a-Thon which will take place across Tennessee for the full month of April.

Hike-a-Thon is a fundraiser for the nonprofit TennGreen Land Conservancy, which works to preserve open and natural spaces across the state. The event is also intended to encourage the public to spend time in nature. Qualifying activities can include walking or hiking, trail biking and paddling. People can participate by doing any of these activities on their own or sign up for organized hiking and paddling events. Gallatin has several public parks, including the Lock 4 mountain bike trail, which offers nine miles of relatively flat biking paths.

Participants can sign up online. Registration is free, but there are fundraising and other requirements to compete for prizes. Everyone registered will receive a free T-shirt. Organizations often use graphic design experts to create event shirts. To be eligible for prizes, individuals need to raise or donate at least $100 and teams need at least $250. Participants also need to submit documentation of their activities, which can be a map, photo or other record. Prize categories include most money raised, most miles hiked, most miles paddled and most vertical feet climbed.

TennGreen Land Conservancy Hike-a-thon will take place from April 1 to April 30 in Gallatin and anywhere else in Tennessee.
