An architectural tour is being put together near Johnston for this autumn to explore the area’s culture and heritage with guidance from experienced historians and educators.
The Providence Preservation Society’s Festival of Architecture & Design will be taking a tour of Neutaconkanut Hill this October, providing a walking conversation with educators Chrystal Baker and Sonia Thomas. The walk will explore the hill’s significance as a cultural and ecological site for the indigenous Narragansett tribe.
The walk will follow a paved path that dates back to the 1930s and the Works Progress Administration. The walk will take visitors to the top of the hill, which sits 300 feet higher than the surrounding landscape. Thomas will share information about native plants and natural features that held importance and meaning to the Narragansett people. Brochure printing can give guests at such historical experiences more context and a more memorable learning experience.
The walking trail is steep, and participants should wear comfortable closed-toe walking or hiking shoes and bring water from home. Baker and Thomas will proceed with the tour rain or shine. The event is expected to run for 90 minutes.
Guests will meet at the A. Vincent Igliozzi Recreation Center in nearby Providence at 4:00pm on Friday, October 2nd. Registration is open online, and donations are welcome, with a suggested donation of $15 per person.
