College students and community members will gather to honor a civil rights leader next week.
The Office of Diversity Initiatives at Wilkes University will host a Martin Luther King Jr. celebration. The event will focus on fostering a strong community and celebrating Dr. King’s contributions. Reverend Shawn Walker will make a presentation.
Wilkes University is a four-year college located just a few miles away from Kingston. Along with education, the institution values diversity, community, and creativity. The college offers undergraduate, graduate, honors, overseas, and internship programs.
The Office of Diversity Initiatives aims to nurture an appreciation for differences in both the classroom and the community. Through student services, programs, and curriculum, the university helps support this goal.
Celebrated on the third Monday of each January in America, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday that commemorates the life and legacy of Dr. King. King helped lead the Civil Rights Movement in the United States and wrote the well-known ‘I Have a Dream’ speech’.
