Kirby Center celebrates two classic eras in March

Wilkes-Barre’s F.M. Kirby Center will be presenting two totally different performances, each representing golden eras.

For Shakespeare enthusiasts or those going to a Shakespeare event for the first time, Daniel Kelly will be bringing his Shakespeare in Jazz All the World’s A Song, to the Kingston area at the beginning of March. Kelly has reinterpreted texts from Shakespeare’s plays into powerhouse jazz. The pieces are sung by jazz vocalists Sarah Elizabeth Charles and Frederick Johnson.

Shakespeare in Jazz All the World’s A Song will be presented at the F.M. Kirby Center, 71 Public Square, on Thursday, March 2 beginning at 7:00 pm. Tickets will be $10.

Towards the end of March, the Center will feature the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus – a live traditional American circus with sideshow, vaudeville, and world-class acrobats, plate spinners, jugglers, sword swallowers, and risk-taking circus performers. Acts will be accompanied by live music.

A 501(c)3 non-profit organization, Bindlestiff Family Variety Arts, Inc. is devoted to supporting and preserving folk, vaudeville, sideshow, and circus traditions.

Traditional American circuses would always get a lot of poster printing done, and posters of lions, elephants, and tigers were hung on buildings, fences, and lampposts before the circus parade came to town. This technique is still used effectively by the modern-day variety of circus.

Tickets will be $10, and the event will take place Thursday, March 23 beginning at 7:00 pm.
