Kingston sees red

August is here and that means time for the 33rd Annual Pittston Tomato Festival. Over 50,000 people are expected to attend the four-day tomato extravaganza.

Several bands will be performing, including Windfall, The Banana Hammocks, The Kindred Souls, and the Jeanne Zano Band. Among other groups will be Sweet Pepper and the Long Hots, Flaxy Morgan, the Sperazza Band, and Fab 3.

Contests will include Little Miss Tomato (girls between two and six years old), Little Mister Tomato (boys between two and six years old) and the Queen Scholarship Pageant. Young ladies between the ages of 14 and 19 will vie for prizes and the $500 cash college scholarship.

Everyone in Kingston, and anywhere else in the area, will be eligible to enter their homegrown tomatoes in the Annual Tomato Contest. Winners in four categories (Most Perfect, Ugliest, Smallest, and Largest) will receive ribbons.

The Tomato Festival Parade committee has invited all area public officials, civic, school, and social organizations to participate. This year all vehicles and floats will have tomato-themed decorations, as well as Banners to introduce their organizations to the TV audience.

A 5K run is also on the schedule. The route will include the Water Street Bridge, the Fort Jenkins Bridge, and downtown Pittston.

The festival will be from 5:00 pm on August 17 to 9:00 pm on August 20 in downtown Pittston. The Tomato Fights will start at 1:30 pm on Saturday, August 19.
