Jazzy folks in Kingston will get an opportunity to spend an evening with Jazz at Lincoln Center's New Orleans Songbook: The Spirit of Mardi Gras coming in mid-February.
The event will celebrate the Crescent City's composers and songs from jazz greats such as Jelly Roll Morton, Ellis Marsalis, Louis Armstrong, and James Black.
The evening will feature pianist Luther S. Allison and vocalists Milton Suggs and Quiana Lynell. Some song selections will include Spencer Williams’ famous "Basin Street Blues" - a nod to the most famous street in New Orleans; Kurt Weill and Bertoit Brecht's "Mack the Knife" - a seedier aspect of the city; and Jelly Roll Morton's "Jelly Roll Blues" - one of his earlier songs.
The audience can also look forward to "So You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans" written by Edgar Delange and Louis Armstrong, and "St. Infirmary Blues" by Joe Primrose. The latter of these claims the honor of being the song most heard in New Orleans funeral processions.
Tickets will be $25. Stationery printers often use pictures of colorful New Orleans Mardi Gras parades and festivities for their spring cards.
The performance will be Thursday, February 20 at the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts, 71 Public Square, Wilkes-Barre. The doors will open at 5:30 pm and showtime will be 7:00 pm.Get a Free Quote for Stationery
