The Silvester New Year’s Eve celebration is taking place at the end of next month in nearby Harmony.
The area has a large number of people descended from German immigrants, and this event is set to feature many of the traditional German New Year’s Eve traditions. There will be a ball drop and fireworks at 6:00 PM, which is midnight German time.
Some of the activities taking place include a 5K marathon and 1K fun run, which will start off at the Grace Church Youth Center. Fees for the 5K are $20 and racers will receive a long-sleeved shirt, and $7 for the 1K in which all finishers will receive a medal. Prices will go up after December 15.
There will also be a Christmas tree throwing contest with a price of $20.17. Children under 10 can compete in the wreath tossing contest, the winner of which will receive a painting party. Tickets cost $2 each. In addition, the public can take part in a Bleiglessen, which is a German tradition of interpreting melted lead shapes, for $2.
Visitors can enjoy a pork and sauerkraut dinner, watch a screening of the film ‘Dinner for One’ or take a self-guided Harmony Museum tour.
This offers a different way for people from the area, including those from nearby Cranberry Township, to celebrate the New Year. Organizers will likely be distributing printed materials like Flyers to spread the word.
The Silvester New Year’s Eve celebration will be held in downtown Harmony on December 31 from 2:00 to 6:00 PM. Call 724-452-7341 for more information.
