National scholarship program names Media student among semifinalists

Penncrest High School in Media recently announced that student Sarah Change is a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program for 2019. She was the only student from the school to earn such a distinction.

Change is one of 16,000 students across the country who were named semifinalists and will have the opportunity to compete for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships. Winners of the program will be among those to be awarded more than $31m in scholarship funding in Spring 2019.

To advance to the next level of the competition and be considered a finalist, Change must fulfill several requirements. A detailed scholarship application needs to be filled out by Change and her high school, with information about her participation in community and school activities, employment, academic record, awards and honors received, and leadership abilities she has demonstrated.

In addition, she needs to write an essay, be recommended and endorsed by an official from her high school, and earn SAT scores that corroborate her earlier performance on qualifying exams.

About 15,000 of the 16,000 semifinalists move onto the level of finalist and will be notified in February of next year of their standing. Accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies determine designees of Merit Scholars.
