Energy plan to be undertaken by Pennsylvania college

A major energy plan has been approved by the Board of Managers at Swarthmore College.

Residents of nearby Media may be interested in this project, which will help the college to reach its goal of carbon neutrality by 2035.

The plan, known as the Roadmap to Zero, will help the college to eliminate 98% of its purchased and on-site electricity greenhouse gas emissions. A main component of the plan will be an overhaul of the cooling and heating infrastructure of the campus. The cost of the project will be $69m and it will further the position of the college as one of the leading institutions of higher education in sustainability and climate efforts. President Valerie Smith said the college has long believed it needed to be a keeper of the natural environment. Smith added that it is important to take action now so that the college can keep its promise of carbon neutrality by 2035.

Chair of the Board of Managers, Salem Shuchman ’84, said that this is an exciting and important undertaking for the college and demonstrates that the values of the college will result in measurable and tangible climate change results for the community.
