Trail extension finally gets green light

It has been a long time coming, but the contract has finally been awarded to continue the Cynwyd Heritage Trail across the Manayunk Bridge.

Once the long awaited-extension is complete, pedestrians and bicyclists will be able to follow the existing trail into downtown Manayunk and connect with the whole Schuylkill River Trail network.

Construction will start this summer and is anticipated to continue for 12 to 15 months. A company out of Blackwood, N.J., A.P. Construction, Inc., is taking the lead on the project. The formal groundbreaking is tentatively scheduled for early September, but no firm date has been set.

Merchants in both Bala Cynwyd and Manayunk will have at least a year to brainstorm with their Print companies about how to make the most of the trail extension, considering which typse of Print advertisements will work best for hikers and bikers.

According to Bob Duncan, Building & Planning Director for the Township, this extension has been anticipated since the renovations of the SEPTA Cynwyd train station and redevelopment of the Trail in 2007.

At nearly a half-mile long and 30 feet in width, the bridge is impressive with what has been described as an “unforgettable” view by Scott Zelov of the Parks & Recreation Committee. Postcard printing services will likely receive increased business as both cities seek to advertise the trail’s continuation.
