This year’s Tennis for Teal event will act as a warm-up to the Philadelphia Freedoms tennis match.
Over the past four years, the event has grown from a one-woman organization to a powerhouse fundraising event in the tennis world.
Elaine Boswell organized the first Tennis for Teal program in 2015, after she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The first program took place at the Springton Tennis Club, near Bala Cynwyd. It raised $8,000 for Boswell's recovery treatments.
The program has since grown, bringing in $16,000 its second year and gaining the support of tennis legend Billie Jean King in 2017. The Tennis for Teal event in November of 2017 raised more than $23,000.
King has remained involved with the program and asked Boswell and Nan Barash, a co-organizer and a board member for the Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation, to host the July 24 event this year.
Organizations that are putting together fundraising events can use poster printing to get the word out to fans. Barush and Boswell were able to get the attention of King after they successfully sold out a screening of ‘Battle of a the Sexes’, a film that chronicles King's tennis match against Bobby Riggs in the 1970s.
This year's Tennis for Teal event will be slightly different from years past. Instead of a tennis match, people are invited to attend a VIP reception before the Philadelphia Freedom's match. Invitees are asked to wear teal to the event and the match. Tickets to the event start at $45 and are available on Ticketmaster.
