Bala Cynwyd record store to close as owners retire

For the past four decades, music lovers on the Main Line knew where to go for new albums and discs – Gold Million Records (formerly known as Plastic Fantastic). However, the record shop, owned by Howard Gold and Max I. Million, recently announced that it would be closing its doors for good.

The pair have already shuttered their shops in State College, PA and in West Philadelphia, near the University of Pennsylvania.

The pair decided to close their last remaining physical shop after careful consideration. Both are nearing their 70s and are looking forward to retirement. Gold told the Main Line Times:

“We’d like to leave while we’re still successful — which we are, so it just made sense.”

Stores that are planning on closing can use flyer printing to let shoppers known of any sales or promotions in their final days.

The exact closing date has not been chosen yet for Gold Million Records, but the owners have stated that they hope to remain open until Thanksgiving weekend. The store first opened over Thanksgiving weekend in 1976.

Once the physical store shuts down, there is a chance that the duo will sell music online. The record store already has an online sales division.

Over the years, Gold Million has called numerous locations near Bala Cynwyd home. Its first home was in a shop near the Bryn Mawr train station. At the time, it was known as Plastic Fantastic. It then moved to Ardmore before heading back to Bryn Mawr a few decades later.
