Wissahickon High School in Ambler has been ranked as one of the nation's best schools, according to US News & World Report.
Over 17,000 schools earned a ranking this year, compared to only 2,700 last year. Wissahickon took the 502nd spot in the country and 11th in the state.
The Philadelphia metropolitan area, which includes five counties, claimed the nine highest spots, and 11 in the top 13. In Montgomery County, Wissahickon was the top school over Spring-Ford, Harriton, and Lower Moreland. It earned a total score of just over 97%, with a 98% reading proficiency and a 93% math proficiency. Over half of the students at Wissahickon took an exam at the Advanced Placement level.
Pennsylvania in general performed well, since two schools placed in the 100 highest and 31 placed in the 1,000 highest with over a 95% graduation rate.
According to US News education managing editor Anita Narayan, the scores give details about schools to the community to see if the district is providing for students.
The report measures performance and proficiency in math and reading, college readiness, graduation rates, performance of traditionally underserved populations, and the curriculum compared to a college level. College readiness scores detail how well students do in international baccalaureate and AP tests.
Schools that ranked high in the report could hire a banner printing company to display pride in the achievement.
