School board faces student demonstration over climate change

At the Portland school district’s headquarters recently, dozens of students crammed into the auditorium to demand that a resolution made three years earlier be acted upon.

From across the district, a total of almost 50 students met in the parking lot of the building where the school board was to meet. Once inside school district headquarters, community members, along with the teens, held up signs featuring the board’s 2016 resolution title – 5272.

Protestors hoping to affect change commonly find their cause gaining more traction when professional poster printing is used.

Portland Youth Climate Council member and Lincoln High junior, Sriya Chinnam assisted in organizing the protest. Speaking during the time set aside for public comments, she addressed the board saying students all through the district should have access to the identical elective climate curriculum as is available at Lincoln.

A response on whether resources would be dedicated to a climate curriculum was demanded by Chinnam with a May 21 deadline. Additionally, the group she represented expects to be updated by district officials every month.

The district superintendent outlined progress made to fulfill the climate resolution over the last three years, among which was an audit of science textbooks throughout the district, which determined they were not in compliance with climate curriculum.

Additionally, he said the district was creating a year-round social justice and climate science course. The 2020-21 school year is the soonest it could go online.
