Portland Airports new look includes something old
A recent announcement made by the Portland International Airport concerning its iconic floorcovering is sure to please many frequent flyers in the area.
The recently renovated terminal will resurrect the much-loved, iconic green carpet, with its distinctive purple and blue markings, from the airport’s past for use in select areas. The carpet in question was first installed by the airport’s operator, the Port of Portland, in 1988 and in 2015 was mostly replaced.
The carpet, the geometric design of which contained the type of symbols seen by air-traffic controllers on their video terminals, will be placed outside security exits in the so-called meet-and-greet areas. It will show up in other locations scattered throughout the airport, although the exact locations have yet to be revealed.
Major renovations are often accompanied by updated promotional materials supplied by a brochure printing service.
When it was announced in 2015 that the carpet would be replaced, airport staff were surprised at the strong response from the public. One possible explanation is that the rise of Instagram, which occurred during the last few years of the carpet’s lifespan, contributed to the carpet’s popularity as it would appear in photos and videos of travelers using the airport.
After it was replaced, the carpet’s newly discovered popularity did not go unnoticed by local businesses. The design was incorporated into T-shirts and a variety of product packaging.
The renovated terminal with its vintage carpeting is slated to open in 2024.
