What's Happening in Portland, OR…

Orphan" highway now officially has a home

A unanimous vote by Portland City Council has completed the process to take possession of the so-called “orphan highway,” otherwise known as 82nd Avenue or Oregon Route 213.

Portland City leaders intend to spend millions to increase safety on what has been one of the most dangerous roads for the city’s pedestrians. Safety advocates have for years been calling for the city to assume control of 82nd Avenue in order to bring it up to the same standards as the rest of Portland’s streets.

Printing services can be useful in keeping the public aware of how their tax dollars are being used in projects like this. City leaders have suggested the high number of accidents on the road is caused by a history of state government not making the necessary infrastructure investments, so want to change this by bringing control of the road into their own hands.

As of Tuesday, June 1, the city of Portland will assume responsibility for the seven-mile stretch of Oregon Route 213 from Northeast Killingsworth Street to Southeast Clatsop Street. In total, a sum of $80m acquired from the American Rescue Plan Act will be used for the “Building a Better 82nd” initiative. Additionally, Portland has earmarked $35m and the state has pledged $70m to improve the road and bring up it to Portland’s standards.
