Lan Su to hold festival for Asian flower
In November, chrysanthemum season begins in the Lan Su area of Portland with the Chrysanthemum Festival, a celebration of a flower that has particular significance in Chinese culture.
The Lan Su Chinese Garden here in Portland, located at 239 NW Everette Street, will be holding a series of horticultural programs spotlighting the chrysanthemum, which in Chinese culture symbolizes longevity, nobility and endurance. One of the highlights of the Chrysanthemum Festival will be the “Nights of the Golden Flower”, a nighttime showcase of floral designs where visitors can view cultivation demonstrations while participating in plant walks.
Print shops supply venues with a variety of items they can sell to the public such as postcards, brochures and posters as mementos of their visit.
A variety of glow-in-the-dark chrysanthemum floral designs will be on display at “Nights of the Golden Flower”, a collaboration of Lan Su Chinese Garden and the Floral Design Institute. More than a dozen local floral artists will participate, including the noted designer Donald Yim. Those attending this event can vote for their favorite floral design.
The Chrysanthemum Festival runs from November 3 through November 19. Guests are asked to not bring their own food, drinks or chairs with them.
“Nights of the Golden Flower” takes place rain or shine 5pm – 7pm November 3, 4 and 5. Tickets are extremely limited, and purchasing them in advance online is highly encouraged.
