What's Happening in Portland, OR…

Council provisionally approves Portland sidewalk repair plan

Portland City Council has conditionally decided on a “plan to make a plan” that would, according to Alex Zielinski of Oregon Public Broadcasting, improve the sidewalks in some of the most underserved neighborhoods in the city.

Sidewalks in District 1 and District 4 that are in the worst shape will according to a recent proposal be researched by the Portland Bureau of Transportation and plans for their improvements proposed. Potholes in these areas will also be addressed.

Cities use a variety of methods including banners and brochures supplied by printing services to keep the public informed.

The Bureau has determined that out of the city’s 5,000 miles of streets, 172 miles are devoid of sidewalks on either one or both sides. According to the Bureau:

“The majority of these streets without sidewalks are in southwest neighborhoods and those east of Interstate 205. These neighborhoods largely fall into District 1 and District 4.”

A fact illustrating the need for sidewalks in at least some of these areas is the fact that almost 50 percent of all traffic deaths on record for last year occurred in East Portland’s District 1.

As Zielinski explained, the city’s tentative plans so far do not include where the funds to pay for sidewalks will come from; rather it tasks the city’s Finance Committee to put together a separate resolution enumerating ways to pay for sidewalk construction.
