What's Happening in Portland, OR…

Jurisdiction change of 82nd Avenue planned by Oregon and Portland

The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) jointly stated that a long-awaited plan to reduce pedestrian deaths and fatal car crashes along East Portland’s 82nd Avenue by turning the ownership of the road over to the city is imminent.

Jo Ann Hardesty, a city commissioner and overseer of the bureau, favors the plan and made the following statement:

“Eighty-second Avenue is the geographic and cultural center of Portland, with a diverse array of businesses, restaurants, and residents. The pedestrian deaths that have occurred recently are unacceptable but preventable with proper investment in safety infrastructure improvements.”

The revitalization of a city area sometimes prompts businesses to contact their printing services to ramp up their marketing strategy.

Pedestrian advocates have for a number of years demanded that 82nd Avenue be turned over to Portland so that the thoroughfare, which technically is a state highway can be addressed as the neighborhood arterial that it is also.

In total, the revamp of the road, including ramps for the disabled, the repair of traffic lights, paving, addition of traffic signals and upgrade of certain pedestrian and sidewalk crossings is estimated to cost $185 million.

A pledge of $70 million from ODOT and $35 million from PBOT leaves the request of $80 million in state funds the only thing standing in the way of the project going forward.
