Japanese Garden to hold public O-Shogatsu celebration
Portland’s Japanese Garden will be holding two O-Shogatsu celebrations in January 2023 – one on New Year’s Day for members only and a second one for the public on January 8.
O-Shogatsu means “standard” in Japanese and refers to the practice of setting one’s standard for how the rest of the year will go. It is a time to dispense of ill-feeling and embrace hope and light-hearted spirits. People are encouraged to throw out the old attitudes that hold them back and seek happy prospects in the new year.
Special events are often promoted with the assistance of a banner printing service, which may also supply brochures and programs.
Visitors on January 8 will be able to experience a number of traditional activities and decorations. The Lion Dance, also known as Shishimai, will take place at 10:45 am and at 11:45 am at the Pavilion East Veranda. Hatsugama, the inaugural tea ceremony of 2023, will be at the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner at 1:30 pm and 2:00 pm. Sumi-e, or Japanese brush painting, will take place from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, with interested parties being instructed in how to paint the animal representing 2023, which is the Year of the Rabbit.
Complimentary coffee will be brewed and served by Portland Coffee Roasters, a long-time partner of the Japanese Garden, to visitors during the event.
