Free adult soapbox derby in Tabor Park

It is almost time for another running of the PDX Adult Soapbox Derby (PASD) at Portland’s Tabor Park.

Three viewing areas exist: The Pits, which is the location of the “Starting Line”; Mid-Mountain, also known as Blood Alley; and the bottom of the track where the winners cross the finish line. In the Pits, people can meet the teams and view the colorful, creative entries up close. Blood Alley is considered the best viewing spot, as well as being the largest and having the most concession stands. Banner printing services can bring some order to special events like this.

Gravity soapbox cars can go 50 MPH, so spectators need to stay alert and follow the directions of the Course Marshall and Flaggers. Also, lingering on the track is forbidden as races are held three minutes apart. Spectators can bring a picnic lunch and beer, but no hard alcohol or drones are permitted. Families are also asked not to bring pets and enjoy their children remain close to them.

This 100% volunteer-run event is totally free to the public. The event’s cost, about $30,000 per year, is funded by sponsorships and donations from the community.

The annual derby contributes to the health and welfare of Tabor Park. Pre-race, volunteers descend on the park to clear brush to provide spectators with comfortable and safe viewing areas. Afterwards, volunteers return to go over the area and clear any trash left behind by spectators.

PASD takes place 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on August 19.
