What's Happening in Portland, OR…

Fan-free games planned by Portland Pickles for 2020

Despite several of the baseball teams in their league calling off their seasons this summer, the Portland Pickles are planning to play – albeit behind closed doors.

It was confirmed recently by the West Coast League (WCL) that its season, slated to start on June 5, will not start as scheduled. However, it was left open whether it would begin in early July. The collegian summer wood-bat league contains 12 teams, but this summer it appears that seven or fewer will be participating, as at least five teams have completely cancelled their 2020 season.

The Pickles’ have stated that their goal is to use Southeast Portland’s Walker Stadium for their home games. They expect to play from July 2 – August 9 with no fans in attendance but broadcasting all of the games for free. Those holding season tickets or who have purchased ticket packages will have their tickets valid for the 2021 season.

Baseball teams, even amateur ones, often turn to print shops to have their game dates printed on convenient to consult pocket-sized schedules the size of business cards. Fans can then at least keep track of when they are happening even if they cannot attend.

A release issued by the Pickles stated:

“Our goal is to bring pride to the community to rally around baseball, but safely from home.”

Over the next few weeks, the league expects to solidify its plans. The other teams that have not ruled out playing an abbreviated season include Washington-based teams in Port Angeles, Ridgefield, Cowlitz County, Wenatchee, Walla Walla, and Yakima.
