DMV test axed for drivers relocating to Oregon
Unlike most states, Oregon has historically required new transplanted drivers to pass a written driving test here even though they may have a valid driver’s license obtained in another state, but that is about to change.
Governor Brown has recently signed a bill that will end that requirement as of June 5, 2021. Those moving to Portland or any other part of Oregon from another state will not be required to take a written test if they already have a valid driver’s licence.
The reason for the change is to help the Oregon DMV work its way through the massive service backlog that has built up since the start of the pandemic. The workload should lighten a little without new residents in the state having to take a written test, not to mention those that would need to come back more than once.
Driver manuals are provided throughout the state by flyer printing services.
DMV spokesperson David House pointed out that for most drivers, it had been many years since they had to study a driver manual. An online survey found that among transplanted drivers who took the written test, nearly a quarter of them failed to pass it on their first try.
According to House, there is no data available to predict the effects of this bill, but he pointed out it would be wise for drivers to review their manuals just to be safe.
