Curbside battery recycling comes to Portland

A new battery recycling program has recently been launched by the Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability in conjunction with local waste hauling services.

In most cases, Portland residents will no longer have to take their dead batteries to specialized drop-off locations but can put them curbside along with their trash and recycling bins. The program, which started June 10, enables anyone in a house or up to a four-family structure to place their batteries in a 1-quart zip-sealed plastic bag that can then go in their yellow glass recycling bin.

The new program is only for residential customers, those using commercial garbage services such as businesses and apartment residents will still be required to use drop-off sites to dispose of their batteries.

Flyer printing services have proven to be an excellent way of providing important information to the public.

According to a Planning and Sustainable bureau news release, all single-use alkaline batteries as well as rechargeable batteries with nickel-metal hydride, lithium-ion and nickel-cadmium chemistries are included in the program. Electronic devices, products such as cellphones, electric toothbrushes and vape pens must still be taken to drop-off sites.

Batteries, with the exception of alkaline ones, need to have clear tape covering each end before being placed in the quart bags to eliminate the possibility of them touching and sparking. Damaged batteries as well as those that are too big to fit in a 1-quart bag cannot be put out for recycling.
