Volunteer beach and river cleanup event to take place

Oregon non-profit SOLVE is hosting over five dozen beach and riverside cleanup events across the state, with several of them in Portland and the greater Portland area.

The annual event starts for this year tomorrow, September 9, and runs through September 17. Volunteers can sign up now to assist with beach and river cleanups, neighborhood litter pickups, habitat restoration, or other projects. The group will focus on preserving the state’s coastlines on September 16 and 17, with events in Florence and Coos Bay.

Since 1986, when it began its beach and river cleanups, SOLVE has gathered up over 2.5 million pounds of marine debris and litter. This would be approximately the weight of half a dozen Boeing 747s. Many non-profits like this utilize flyer and poster printing services.

According to SOLVE, the organization’s event last year saw over 3,000 volunteers pick up more than 50,000 pounds of trash.

Those who cannot make the 2023 Beach and Riverside Cleanup may wish to participate in the September 20 Portland business district cleanup, which will meet at 220 NW 2nd Avenue in front of the Lan Su Chinese Garden Administrative Office.

SOLVE will provide volunteers with high-vis Vests, trash Bags, gloves, and trash grabbers, although volunteers are encouraged to bring any of these supplies they have on hand and donate them if they wish. Volunteers are asked to dress for the weather, including rain if it is forecast, and wear closed-toed shoes.
