Portland eatery included on Tasting Tables must-visit list

Tasting Table, a news outlet, recently released their list of must-visit U.S. restaurants that specialize in a single dish and among these 18 dining establishments was a Portland restaurant – Nong’s Khao Man Gai.

According to Tasting Table, when publishing their list:

“There are dozens of reasons for a restaurant to narrow its focus to one single dish. Aside from the lower cost of ingredients and predictability in kitchen workflow, practice makes perfect.”

A local Print shop can supply inside signage that will pull together an organization’s look.

Using conversations with locals and staff as well as firsthand experience was how Tasting Table arrived at its one-dish restaurant list. Explaining its choice of Nong’s, Tasting Table explained:

“At Nong’s Khao Man Gai, simplicity reigns. Nong Poonsukwattana began serving her version of khao man gai (Thai chicken and rice) from a Portland food cart, and it became so beloved that she opened permanent locations. For years, it was the only thing on the menu: poached chicken, fragrant rice, cucumber, cilantro, and a punchy fermented soybean sauce.”

According to Nong’s website, focusing on a single dish done really, really well is common for restaurants in Thailand. Although its signature dish still takes center stage, Nong’s menu has added a few other dishes. Portland is fortunate to have two locations of Nong’s, one Downtown and the other in Southeast Portland. Their atmosphere is casual and cozy, and the prices are quite reasonable at $15 per plate.
