Portland to play part in National Preparedness Month

Pacific Power and Portland General Electric (PGE) are urging their customers to create an emergency kit and make other preparations for power outages throughout the year, with September being National Preparedness Month.

Despite ongoing power grid updates and improvements to electric equipment enhancing the reliability of the city’s energy infrastructure, Pacific Power and PGE are campaigning this month to raise public awareness on how to deal more easily with power outages.

Companies wishing to mail out safety checklists or other information can rely on flyer printing services to assist them.

The power companies suggest people should always have at least two weeks’ worth of food and water for all family members, pets, and livestock, as well as prescription medicines. Additionally, the public should develop a backup plan for electric controlled medical devices and relocation options. Each household should be in possession of an emergency kit equipped with solar phone chargers, flashlights, batteries, first aid essentials, and vital phone numbers.

Among other suggestions to ensure preparedness, customers should go to their electricity provider’s website, log on and check to see if their contact information is up to date, so the company reach them if necessary.

PGE customers can go to Portlandgeneral.com/wildfireoutages to view an interactive map revealing potential areas for public safety power shutoff. Pacific Power customers can view a similar map and learn more about outage preparation at https://www.pacificpower.net/prepare.
