Eric Ueland, a native of Portland has been appointed by President Donald Trump to be the director of legislative affairs.
Any change in occupation or title is ample reason to order new Business Cards, especially for a high-profile position like this.
Ueland was formally a domestic policy deputy assistant to the president and may currently be the most influential Oregonian on Capitol Hill. In his new position, Ueland will be President Trump’s uppermost liaison with Congress. Part of his responsibilities will be navigating his policy vision through the twists and turns of a divided legislature.
An earlier nomination of Ueland by President Trump would have placed the Portland resident in the No. 3 slot at the State Department in the position of undersecretary of state for management. If the President had not withdrawn the nomination and the Senate had confirmed Ueland, he would have had the day-to-day management of one of the most consequential and complex agencies in the federal government.
At present, it is unclear why Trump withdrew Ueland’s nomination for that post.
Ueland, a Central Catholic High School graduate, was raised in Northeast Portland. He has been chief of staff to Senate majority leader Bill Frist, and he played a crucial role in President Bill Clinton’s impeachment trial. More recently, Ueland was a Trump transition team member.
