Portland events and retailers grow foot traffic in 2024
Making a comeback from the COVID pandemic, Downtown Portland saw a significant rise in foot traffic in 2024, primarily through the opening of new retail shops and the return of high-profile events.
The numbers have been crunched and last year approximately 27.3 million people visited Portland’s downtown area with the highest visiting months being June, July and August. According to Downtown Portland Clean & Safe, those three months each welcomed about 2.4 million people.
The 2024 level of foot traffic was, although an improvement, a bit more than half of its pre-COVID numbers in 2019. Events such as the Foo Fighters concert, which attracted 30,000 attendees to Providence Park, and the Rockstar Energy Open at Waterfront Park as well as pop ups such as the Coraline’s Curious Cat Trail share responsibility for the increase.
As the number of visitors to downtown have increased so have the number of people employed there with about 500,000 more than in 2023. Pre-pandemic levels in the city were about 13.9 million.
Currently office buildings in Portland’s downtown area have a 25 percent vacancy rate. Municipalities can utilize brochure printing services to attract tenants to downtown office buildings as well as businesses.
Downtown Portland Clean & Safe’s projections for the city’s downtown is an optimistic one. According to data collected by the nonprofit, the last two years have seen 76 retail businesses opening here.
