What's Happening in Portland, OR…

Oregon finally moves forward on Real ID

Better late than never, Oregon has set a date, July 6, when Real ID-compliant licenses will be obtainable.

Starting October 1, 2020, anyone wishing to board a plane, as well as nuclear power plant workers and those seeking admittance to secure federal facilities, will need to conform to the federal Real ID Act. Come July, a surge of Real ID seekers is anticipated to flood DMV offices. The TSA has advised Oregon residents to consider obtaining a passport rather than waiting until July.

Flyer printing is one of several means of informing the public of an upcoming deadline.

Some passport offices, such as those in the Portland area, are equipped for a significant increase in volume of applications, but others are expected to struggle. Bill Burgess, Marion County Clerk, is not especially concerned over an influx of passport seekers.

Residents’ of the state are warned to submit their application in June 2020 if they want to fly in October. One option to save money is to purchase a U.S. passport card rather than a passport book. The card is $65 plus fees as opposed to $145 with fees for the passport book. The passport cards can be used for flying and entry into Mexico and Canada.

Those wanting to get a Real ID-compliant driver’s license will need to supply extra documentation and an additional $20.

The Real ID Act was pass by Congress in 2005 per 9/11 Commission recommendation.
