Past Portland Winter Light Festival have taken place over a few nights each year in a bid to brighten the wintery darkness and this year the event will be spread out over time and throughout the city.
Due to its new format the 2023 Winter Lights, will permit physical distancing, provide more opportunities for viewing and minimize crowds. Instead of a centralized location for Winter Lights, which mixes light and technology to offer interactive experiences, this year’s event will be popping up across the city and will go on for nine evenings.
Savvy restaurant and bar owners often work with Print shops to promote their proximity to special events.
Chris Herring, the festival’s artistic director explained the event’s goal saying:
“We’re doing it to bring people together and also to bring people out of the dark. We are trying to be the steppingstone to spring.”
The 2020 the city’s Winter Light Festival included 114 illuminated art installations, an illuminated evening bike ride, dozens of performances, kinetic fire sculptures, live ice carving, and dance performances.
The festival will be held from February 3 to 11 in a variety of locations across Portland, among which will be several “anchor” locations where music, large-scale artworks, and food carts will be on hand. Operational only on the weekends, anchor locations will include the World Trade Center, Pioneer Courthouse Square, and the Electric Blocks in the Central Eastside at SE Second and Clay.
